There are 5 steps that social security uses to decided if you are disabled and able to receive benefits.
1. Are you working? If you are able to work in your job, then you will be denied.
2. Do you have what is called a severe condition. This means does your severe impairment interfere with performing basic work activities. Examples are back pain due to a herniated disc, arthritis of the knee or headaches due to migraines.
3. Is your condition found in the list of disabling conditions.
4. Can you do the work you did previously? If you are found despite your impaiment able to perform similar jobs, then you would be denied.

5. Are you able to do any other work? Social security considers your age, past work activity and education when deciding if you are able to do any other work.
There are certain situations where you will be allowed benefits if the medical evidence from your doctors support your inability to work. These are called meeting the listings or compassionate allowances. This evidence is rather technical and is would be best explained by using the services of an attorney who specializes in disability cases.
