Individuals who have applied for Social Security disability are having to contend with very long waiting times when appealing their cases. Administrative Law judges are faced with huge caseloads of appeals across the country. It is estimated that over a million cases are pending. Wait times for a hearing can be as long as nearly 2 years with the national average about 16 months. According to Social Security, several hundred more judges to review cases are planned, but this will only take place over the next several years. In the meantime, thousands of individuals are desperate. The main problem appears to be insufficient funding by the federal government.
