The U.S. Department of Education recently announced that student loan borrowers with disabilities that are expected to continue may be eligible for cancelling their loans.( Total and Permanent Disability loan discharge: TPD). This means that one has to be totally and permanently disabled. President Obama titled this the Student Aid Bill of Rights. It is estimated that there are about 400,000 individuals that may be eligible. Under Secretary Ted Mitchell stated that they will notify potential borrowers about the benefit and guide them through steps needed to eliminate their loans. It was announced that beginning April 18th, 2016 borrowers who are positively identified will receive a letter stating that the borrower is eligible for loan forgiveness and the steps needed to have their loan discharged.
