Swelling of the legs is often due to problems with the venous system of the legs due to blockage of the deep venous system causing swelling. 2.There is another situation called brawny edema where at least two thirds of the leg between the ankle and knee is involved where the swelling is very dense and feels firm to pressure associated with skin pigmentation changes; With brawny edema, the swelling(edema) does not pit on pressure.
