Tennis elbow(lateral epicondylitis) is an inflammation of the tendons and muscles of the elbow and forearm causing pain on the outside of the elbow.
It is believed to be due to overuse. Besides athletes, other individuals such as carpenters, painters and plumbers are susceptible 0f developing this condition. However, it can occur without a history of injury and be due to unknown causes.
Persons with this condition note pain and sometimes a burning sensation on the lateral( outer part of the elbow). Symptoms may worsen when performing activities involving the forearm such as using a wrench, painting, using a tennis racquet or even just turning a doorknob. Also, a weak grip may be present in some individuals. In severe cases, you may have difficulty raising your arm over your head as well as show a weakened grip.
If despite various treatments, symptoms significantly impact on your ability to perform your job, you should consider applying for Social Security benefits
The state agency will review your medical record to determine how your condition affects your ability to perform your work activities. The decision as to whether you qualify for benefits is also based on your age, level of education and a history of your past occupations. The state requires strict requirements for younger individuals to receive benefits while those over 50 may be granted benefits more easily, although again consideration of your age and past occupations plays an important role. In severe cases you may have difficulty raising your arm overhead or even to chest level. Also, in advanced situations, your grip may be weak resulting in failure to grasp objects. Depending on your past jobs and age, inability to raise your arm or lift weights may result in your being granted benefits. If your grip is weak this also may increase your chances of success.
If the information in your medical record is scanty or insufficient, you may be asked to undergo a physical examination by a CE, which stands for consultative examination.
It should be kept in mind that Social Security has complex rules which apply in such cases. That is why it is very important that one use the services of an attorney familiar with disability cases from the start. He can explain how Social Security works, increase your chances of success and perhaps shorten the time for a decision.
