Currently, there are about 11 million individuals who receive Social Security disability checks. Sources report that they may face steep benefit cuts next year which could amount to a 19% reduction unless congress acts. For example, the average monthly benefit for disabled individuals is slightly over 1,000 dollars. With a reduction in benefits one could lose about 192 dollars a month.
However, a proposed fix is possible where Congress could shift tax revenues from the larger Social Security retirement fund to the disability program. The acting Social Security Commissioner stated that shifting the tax revenue would not result in an adverse effect on the Social Security program.
Certain congressmen state it is time to Congress to take action now since the deadline is getting closer.
