A meningioma is one of the commonest type of brain tumor and is primarily found in women. Most of them are non-cancerous and tend to grow slowly. Many are not found for long periods of time and may not cause any problems until they grow and impact on certain areas of the brain and spinal cord. A definite cause has not been found, but those with a condition called neurofibromatosis type 2 tend to get benign tumors of the nerves in different areas of the body. An MRI of the brain is necessary to diagnose the condition.
Some of the more common symptoms are seizures, headaches, visual problems, weakness in muscles in either the upper or lower extremities causing difficulty with walking or using one’s hands. Also, one may have problems with poor memory and hearing.
If the tumor is large and causing serious problems, then surgery is often done.
Social Security recognizes this condition as a serious impairment which may cause difficulty in performing work related duties and activities of daily living. Therefore, if one has this condition they should seriously consider applying for disability which involves assembing all your medical records. Medical records from your prime treating physician usually is considered the most important. Also, include how your impairment affects your ability to perform activities of daily living. These records will then be reviewed by disability specialists at the state level who will then make the decision as to whether you are allowed or denied benefits.
In general, these records must show that depending on your specific neurological problem, you have difficulty in walking, lifting weights or using your hands. The process is rather complex and difficult to understand from a lay person’s perspective. That is why using a disability attorney is important to help you understand and guide you through the various steps during the application process.
